What are the states that use Federal Form W-4 for their state tax purposes?
The US states - North Dakota (ND), New Mexico (NM) and Utah (UT) use Federal Form W-4 for their state income tax withholding.
Note: Prior to year 2022, Colorado state also used Federal W-4 form for their state tax withholding. But for year 2022, a new Colorado Employee Withholding Certificate (Form DR 0004) is available for Colorado state tax purpose. Employees can choose to complete the new Colorado Employee Withholding Certificate (Form DR 0004) or use Federal Form W-4 for their state tax withholding.

For other states, follow the procedure give below:
In this example, New Mexico is taken as the residence state and hence New Mexico state withholding form appeared for Residence Tax Withholding.
To complete the form enter a value in step 4(C) or check the checkbox if exemption is applicable.
The tax filing status will be auto populated from the Federal Form W-4. Since these four states follow the Federal Form W4, the tax filing status of both Federal and State tax forms must be the same.

In case if you change the tax filing status, the system will display the following error message.
These forms are editable until the New Hire submits the onboarding information to HR.
Suppose, if you edit the tax filing status on the Federal form and the value on the State tax forms remains unaltered, the error will be captured on Submit to HR.
