use Federal Form W-4 for their state tax purposes?

The four US states - Colorado (CO), states of North Dakota (ND), New Mexico (NM), and Utah (UT) use the Federal Form W-4 to calculate state income tax withholding. 

Note: Prior to 2022, Colorado also used the Federal W-4 for their form for state tax withholding. However, as of 2022, Colorado requires the Colorado Employee Withholding Certificate (Form DR 0004) to be completed separately for state tax purposes. The sample 2022

For states that use the Federal Form W-4, the withholding amount fields - Step 3 and Step 4(a) & (b) are disabled. Only Step 4(c), the extra tax withholding field, remains open for entry.

If exemption from withholding applies, select the exemption checkbox.

The tax filing status in Step 1(c) will be auto populated from automatically populated based on the selection made in the Federal Form W-4. Since these four states follow the Federal Form W4, the tax filing status of both Federal and State tax forms must be the same.

In case if If you change the tax filing status, the system will display the following error message will appear when signing the form.

These Tax forms are remain editable until the New Hire submits the onboarding information is submitted to HR through the "Submit to HR.Suppose, if you edit " activity. If the tax filing status is updated on the Federal form and the value Form W-4 but not on the State state tax forms remains unaltered, the an error will be captured on message will appear when completing the "Submit to HR" activity.
